Tecrübe Puanı: 4 ![]() | Kürd Analarının Fedakarlığını Anlamak: Daya Daya Sazan M. Mandalawi By Sazan M. Mandalawi The Kurdish Globe The sacrifices of a Kurdish mother is far from being realized Not so many things have been written about the leading role mothers play in the much criticized patriarchal Kurdish society. To many Kurds the idea of having a home is more or less related to have a mother that not only gives birth but also guards you with her own life. As Globe's Sazan Mandalawi notes the mother of a family represents the hospitality that a home is based upon. The person who sacrifices in her self for her family, the respect she has for you, the extent to which she warmly welcomes you into her house, even if you are a stranger. Her sympathy and kindness; and the charming smile revealing the random gaps between her teeth; I am describing 'Daya' the traditional Kurdish mother, a treasure in her unique way, a character that is indeed worth mentioning. It was a learning experience more than I had expected or hoped for. Originally, it was a mission to find the story behind the leaking taps, sandy drinking water and pipes. At the end of the day, it was the image of a traditional Kurdish woman, and the much respected and plausible role she fulfills as a house wife that could not perish in my mind. It was a pleasure to meet a group of women in a particular suburb of Erbil, to discuss their water issues in a simple questionnaire. Whilst all those we met had no educational background, each one was inspiring in so many ways. These women, on average no less than a mother of five or six children (some had seven and nine children) are indeed superwoman in their own rights. It is not naïve to regard her as a sacrificing symbol in our nation; not long ago in our history, many lost their sons and husbands in wars and conflicts. Those who did not, suffered in their own distinct ways. It does not take long to sit with one, and realize the hardship she has suffered throughout her life. Therefore, it is neither surprising nor unexpected to see them age long before their years. As we stepped into each house, with no previous meeting their warm greetings and welcome makes you feel rather timid and ashamed as you believe you do not deserve all this hospitality. "Take a seat in the upper area of the room, put the cushion behind your back, allow me bring you a second tea, forgive me for my lack of generosity, please stay for lunch?" the number of times I heard these sentences were countless. To an extent that makes you rather uncomfortable, for you to realize there is nothing you have done to receive all this care. Most of these women who manage large families work much harder than the nine-to-five woman behind her desk in any office. There is no doubt these woman carry a larger burden on their shoulders when compared to their male counterparts. Guests in some of these households are like floods- flowing in and out non stop. The cooking process is also an around the clock duty; after breakfast she is preparing lunch, before even the lunch has been fully digested she is already thinking of what is for dinner. A Kurdish mother is unique in that she sacrifices in herself for the sake of her family and children, and rarely makes the time to enjoy herself. The humble joy for these mothers is the smile she sees on the face of her children, her contentment is witnessing their success and see them grow before her eyes. She finds happiness when one enters her house- a purist in her own way. Despite the hardships they have suffered, the confrontations they face in their everyday lives the optimism some of these woman have of the future of Kurdistan is rather satisfying. Even though she has no educational background, and can not use the computer, read or write but the many lessons we can learn from the traditional Kurdish mother is absolutely remarkable. Whilst some are rather shy, most are opinionated and know more than you think they would. You can not help but smile as she reaches to find her ringing mobile phone, at that point you can not help but say to yourself "she is steadily catching up." A traditional Kurdish woman is a sign of an attached family, a symbol of hope, and indeed the backbone of the household; however, what generates much sorrow and causes heartache is her role is never appreciated or realized as it should be.
